A Long Overdue Update

I realize that I have been horribly neglecting my blog. Over the last few weeks a lot of stuff has been going on. Tomorrow I am getting a Summit 400 48-port Extreme switch. I am prettttty excited. So now I have to learn how to “program” on an Extreme switch. But right now, I got my hardware firewall set up. Tonight I am going to move DHCP and DNS over to my server, where it will be able to handle it much better. I also fly back to Colorado Thursday for Easter, and I will be able to see everyone, maybe even have an interview.

Anyways, watching Chuck.

Til next time,

iPhone Adventure

Greetings,
Today, on a whim, I decided to purchase an iPhone. This whim was brought on partially due to Morgan’s need to replace his after shattering his screen. After going to the AT&T store in The Marketplace, they recommended that we go to the Apple Store in Eastview Mall for Morgan’s broken phone, and said that I was not an authorized user on the wireless account, so I was unable to get one there.

After we ventured to Eastview Mall, we headed straight for the Apple Store, where the “Geniuses” were more than willing to take $199 in order to “fix” Morgan’s phone. By “fix”, I surely mean take his, give him a refurbished device, and call it a day.

After some research the previous night, Morgan has two options:
a) Purchase a refurbished device from the AT&T store online for $199. Purchase a new screen online for $50, fix up the broken phone and sell it on eBay.
b) Purchase a refurbished device from the AT&T store online for $199, sell the broken phone on eBay for substantially less than he would get for investing the $50 and fixing it.

Back to the “Geniuses”, why would someone spend $199 to get a refurbished phone when they could get one online for $199 from AT&T, and sell their current phone to offset some of that cost?

Back to my predicament, the “Geniuses” were less than helpful, saying I had to be the account holder in order to purchase an iPhone through them. I must have misunderstood, I thought Apple owned the iPhone, not AT&T. This posed a slight problem, because my mother is the account holder, and she is roughly 1600 miles away.

Moral of the story, due to the incredible difficulty in attempting to buy an iPhone, I will not be purchasing one with this round of paycheck, but in fact will be spending my money on a 24port gigabit switch.

Nice try Apple and AT&T, maybe next time though…

New Beginnings

Ah… The smell of a brand new quarter. I officially am an ISF major, and my schedule reflects such. I have a job, I have a nice schedule, everything seems to be going well.

Alas, more work to do…

Wow…

What a crazy week it has been. I realize I have been horribly neglecting my blog. On the plus side, got my brand new monitor, went to a [decent] LAN in PA. It was no where close to the standard that EGS RIT has set for LAN parties. But for those who attended, it was a very good thing I managed to squeeze my server into JT’s car. Otherwise, I doubt there would be much out of tourney gaming. Nick & I won the Rock Band 2 tournament, who would’ve guessed.

Other than that, it’s spring break, and I am spending it working… I lead an exciting life.

Working Hard on a Friday Morning

Forgive me I have sinned… I bought my monitor.

Other than that. Life has been CRAZY!!! Working full time and juggling school is absolutely insane. But this paycheck did make everything totally worth it.

On a more depressing note, my car has been having some serious issues, which kind of puts a damper on this whole thing. But oh well, no use getting down.

Til next time,
Rusty

The Beginning to Another Week…

As the beginning of another week… I can’t help but wonder exactly what our purpose is… This is my existential moment, but here I am. I wonder what impact I have on others lives. Are pictures taken just snapshots of those moments, do I mean more to those people then just a passing memory, do those people mean more to me? If only we could tell the future, knowing what path we’ve chosen, and if we’ll be happy where we end up. I have no idea what I am doing, I am just sorta winging it…

5am

Yes… I am well aware that it is indeed 5am in the lovely city of Rochester. With that said, I have just finished writing my term paper for Cyber Self Defense. 5 pages and 1500 words later, I can finally sleep, but wait… I have a CS2 test at 10 that needs some studying, and after that I am headed into work. Needless to say… It’s gonna be a long day.

on a side note… this brought me great joy….

First Day of Work

Well… I started my first day of work at 5LINX today. All in all, a productive day, I learned a lot, and who knew I would be working a full time job on top of school. On the down side, I am working from 2-11 every night, and I have some major projects due soon… Things could get sticky. Alas, back to work for me…

Weekend Update: With Rusty Bower…

So I finally recieved a call yesterday, from the company 5linx, where I interviewed at the beginning of this month. Surprisingly, I was actually hired, and I start monday. How about that? More importantly, I will hopefully be making buckets of money, which will most likely go directly towards computer purchases ( Newegg credit card here I come? ).

The List

1) A new 24″ Monitor ( the current one randomly loses the video feed, and then blacks out )

2) 4 more 750GB hard drives for my raid array ( bringing the total usable storage to 4.2TB )

3) An Extreme 24 port gigabit switch
